Questions and Answers
What is the V-Chip?
The V-Chip from Tri-Vision is an advanced monitoring system unparalleled in the consumer electronics or cable industry. The V-Chip technology combines hardware and software to block programming by rating code and content categories, as regulated by the Federal Communications Commission in the United States and by the Canadian Radio Television Commission (CRTC) in Canada. This selective blocking capability positions the V-Chip above any other blocking technology available.

I recently purchased a new TV. How can I tell if it has the V-Chip?
Check your owners manual, or contact the manufacturer. Even if your set does have the V-Chip, it is still necessary for you to determine if the V-Chip you have will read Canadian as well as U.S. ratings. Some of the TVs sold in Canada with a V-Chip will not work with the Canadian ratings.

I have an older TV that does not have the V-Chip. Can I get the V-Chip installed in my set?
Unfortunately TV's cannot be retrofitted with the V-Chip. However, a patented set top version, the v.gis™ is available that can be used with your existing TV to give you the same benefits as a new TV with the V-Chip already installed. (Click "Buy Now" above for ordering information)

How does the V-Chip work?
The V-Chip intercepts a ratings code transmitted by broadcasters or video. For details please click page 'Setup'.

Who establishes the ratings system?
A committee composed of parents, television broadcasters, television programming producers, cable operators, appropriate public interest groups, and other interested individuals. Please refer to the website "vchipcanada.ca" for a detailed explanation.

Can the V-Chip be turned off?
The V-Chip is available with the on/off option. VCRs, televisions and other consumer electronics products incorporated with V-Chip technology will automatically remain off unless turned on by the consumer.

Can kids unblock what the V-Chip blocks?
No, parents use a secret number to access the blocking technology. The settings cannot be changed by anyone else. The V-Chip will not limit programming access to adults. V.gis™ has a controlled access button, allowing adults the choice to activate or deactivate by using PIN number.
