Set-up

How to Setup V-chip Decoder:

Plug the V-chip decoder so that it receives the video signal from a cable box or a VCR and sends out the filtered signal to the TV set, as shown in the picture above.

Place the IR link so that it is accessible to the hand remote, such as on top of the TV set.

Use the hand remote to access the online menus to change control settings such as:

Password,
Device lock,
TV ratings,
Closed captioned language.

Details

Broadcasters encode their television transmissions with program ratings specifically for the V-chip. The program rating is inserted into the black bar between each frame of video - line 21 of what is known as the vertical blanking interval - in the same way closed captioning is incorporated in the television broadcasts. This rating code is re-transmitted every one to three seconds to enable programs to be blocked as soon as possible after they are selected. The V-chip device reads this television signal and compares it to the level of ratings pre-authorized by parents in the home. If the level of the program ratings exceeds what is deemed appropriate by parents, the television program will be blocked. The use of different access codes for different members of the family enables the V-chip device to be tailored to the individual watching at any one time.
